Abstract
Recent research advances in fastening and joining of engineering materials are outlined with emphasis on mechanically fastened and adhesively bonded connections. Research topics include multi-variable mathematical modeling of the vibration-induced loosening phenomena in preloaded bolted joints, lightweight material joining, creep modeling, elastic interaction, NDE, fatigue, FEA simulation, adhesively-bonded joints, nanoparticle enrichment, and joining methods. Sample research topics include linear and nonlinear mathematical models for vibration loosening, which incorporate tribological parameters, system geometry, preload level, materials, as well as the amplitude and frequency of the excitation, on the loosening performance. A breakthrough closed form criterion is outlined for preventing vibration-induced loosening. Another research topic explores various joining methods for lightweight material joints as they influence joint static and dynamic load-carrying capacity under cyclic heat and humidity. Research data, analysis, and conclusions are presented.
